Personal Bio

Dr. Alhussein Albarbar is Professor of Sustainable Systems Engineering and an internationally recognised leader in net zero/low-energy buildings, smart control strategies, and sustainable energy systems. With more than 30 years of industry, research, and educational experience, Alhussein’s work focuses on applying advanced engineering and digital technologies to address environmental challenges and accelerate the transition to low-carbon systems.

As Founding Head of the Advanced Industrial Diagnostics (AID) Research Lab, and through leadership roles spanning engineering, materials, digital manufacturing, and hydrogen fuel cells, Professor Albarbar has developed multidisciplinary research integrating energy, smart sensing, AI, and sustainability. His pioneering work in MEMS-based sensing, intelligent monitoring, and AI-driven control systems has contributed to reducing the environmental impact and carbon footprint of industrial equipment through improved energy efficiency, reliability, and operational performance.

His research encompasses renewable energies, low-carbon buildings, net-zero technologies, energy optimisation, and data-driven environmental management. He has led/contributed to major EU and Innovate UK projects addressing real-world decarbonisation challenges. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, three books, and numerous book chapters, including research on engine emissions, renewable energy systems, hydrogen technologies, and sustainable engineering. He has also supervised more than 30 PhD researchers, helping develop the next generation of leaders in environmental engineering, clean energy, and decarbonisation.
